The kingdom of God is upside-down, and nowhere else in the Bible is this stated more clearly than in the sermon on the mount. Under the Old Testament system of law-keeping, our righteousness or the lack thereof was judged by our actions. Jesus turns this on its head in his first words on the mount as He puts our inner motives and attitude of the heart on the same level as our external actions. How will we ever be able to come close to achieving this standard? The good news is we don’t have to! Through grace, we can accept the gift that Jesus gave us in fulfilling this impossible standard. Now, we are responsible for extending this forgiveness to those who have wronged us and we are called to live in compassion, not anger.
