Today is Ascension Sunday. We are led in praying Mass by Fr Gerard Aynsley and the community of Mercy Parish – Whānau Aroha in Dunedin South.
The feast of the Ascension might be compared to the passing of the baton in a relay race. On this day over 2,000 years ago, Jesus passed the baton of responsibility for the Kingdom of God to his followers. Jesus commissioned them to complete the work he had begun
So then, like the disciples, let us not be looking upwards to heaven. Jesus is here within and among us. Jesus walks and talks with us. And we, too, like the disciples, are sent forth to be living witnesses to build the reign of God. Our missionary endeavour is to bring Jesus and his message of Good News to all we meet in what we say and what we do as we are assured by Jesus ‘ know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time’.
