Throughout scripture, we learn about the power of forgiveness, but there is a second part to the process: The victim is instrumental in the recovery and restoration of the offender. We can see this process in action when Joseph finally reveals himself to his brothers, and while they are reeling in shock and expecting the worst, Joseph sets them free and explains how God turned what they intended as harm into good. This is also the core message of the Gospel. In Jesus, we are not only forgiven for our sins, but He also actively restores our standing with the Father! We should not weaponize people's past against them, for that can cut them off from the restorative work that God may be trying to bring into their lives.
